The Presentation

How did I come to the musical path I am on today? The stories I'll share, illustrated with music on kalimba, recorder, and other instruments, paint the picture of my spirituality experienced through music.

One of the best things that comes to me through music is joy: the joy of discovering something new, the joy of getting better on an instrument day by day, the joy of connecting with someone through the magic of music, and the joy of spiritual revelation coming into my heart through the music. Joy will be a recurring theme through these musical stories that trace the path of my musical development.

The Hands-on Demonstration

I don't think there is a surefire path to musical joy, but one instrument that often enables people who know relatively little about music to achieve joyful musical expression is the kalimba. We'll be playing the kalimbas together, experimenting with the possibilities.

On the other hand, the more you know about music, the more that can help to strengthen your kalimba playing. I've been playing kalimba for 25 years, and of course, I am still getting better with each day that I play.

The Jam

Don't leave your instruments at home, but bring them on down. After everyone has had a chance to play on the kalimbas, let's add the voices of flutes and guitars, as well as our own voices.

I am a Quaker, and I honor that of God in each of us. I seek to make improvisational music in which each player spends as much energy on listening to one another as they spend on deciding what to play themselves. I seek a musical experience that benefits from the contributions of all of us. I seek to create a river of spirit flowing from each of our hearts.
